Andy Murrays Loses to Soderling in Qtr-Finals

Whenever Andy Murray wins a match, I can't wait to post it here. Whenever Andy loses, I have to force myself not to put it off.

In the end, Soderling got his revenge 6-1 6-4. Murray said afterward that he was tired mentally, which is hardly surprising after the drama of the the previous weekend.

Still, a Qtr-Final appearance was enough to make Murray the #1 GB tennis player.

Next up is the Tennis Channel Open in Las Vegas.

Andy Muray - Circa 1994

This is a great story about a six-year old Andy Murray beating a ten-year old at tennis, making him the youngest ever winner of a Scottish ranking tournament.

Ryan Openshaw is now a law graduate, but remembers this match with a mixture of pride and embarrassment.

Murray Through to Qtr-Finals in Memphis

Well this caught me out.

Still riding high on Andy Murray's first ATP title, I completely missed the fact that he was due to begin another tournament three days later.

Murray won his first two rounds against Rainer Schuttler and Rik De Voest. Both went to three sets, and the first round match in particular was a close run thing with Murray just two points from defeat at one set down and 5-4 down in the second.

The final score was 1-6 7-5 6-2.

The 2nd round match was not as close but still took almost two and a half hours and three sets - 7-6 (7/4) 3-6 7-5

Andy Murray will face Robin Soderling in the Qtr-Finals for the second time in just over a week. This should be a tasty encounter considering Soderling's comments about Murray after their previous encounter.

Even if the match goes Soderling's way, however, it could be enough to move Murray's ranking above that of Tim Henman's, making him the GB number one for the first time.

Andy Murray Beats Lleyton Hewitt in San Jose Final

I've been ill in bed for a couple of days and getting news on Andy Murray's weekend success has been tough. The last I heard was that Murray had beat Roddick to set up a final against Lleyton Hewitt.

This morning, I was amazed to find out that Murray had managed to defeat Hewitt in three sets to claim his first ATP tour title - a result that rockets Murray 13 places up the world rankings and will (maybe) silence his recent critics.

Allow me to catch you up on the matches I've haven't reported on yet.

Qtr-Final: Murray Vs Soderling

Murray completed his second victory against Soderling 4-6 7-5 6-4.

At a set down and a break down in the second, things were looking ominous, but Murray composed himself to break back and win the next two sets.

Afterwards Soderling had much to say about what he perceived to be a lack of manners on Murray's part. Soderling complained Murray was talking during the point and cheering points before the call had been made. Still, Soderling admitted:

"I think I played the same way the whole match. He was just starting to play a little better. He's a very good player, for sure."

Semi-Final: Murray Vs Roddick

Playing the world number 3, even Murray gave himself little chance of success. But being the underdog is more familiar to Murray than his more recent matches of expectation.

Murray broke in the eleventh game of both sets to win 7-5 7-5 leaving Roddick frustrated.

The Time put it best when they said:

"British 18-year-olds are not expected to defeat the world No 3 and say “it was quite a good effort”. And say that getting to the top 50 is “a pretty decent achievement”. "

Final: Murray vs Hewitt

Hewitt may be ranked a few places below Roddick, but surely this was one step to far for 18 year old Andy Murray?

2-6, 6-1, 7-6 (3) was the final score in a remarkable display of composed tennis.

Now ranked 47 in the world and still the youngest player in top 100, Murray has had, undoubtedly, the finest week of tennis in his life.

It's been amazing to see the reaction of some to Murray's recent lack-lustre performances, branding him as over-hyped when, in truth, they'd probably never seen him play. This should surely quiet those nay-sayers for good.

When Murray is playing well, he is tough to play against and makes few mistakes, forcing his opponents to try and win the point outright. The BBC website has an excellent discussion on Murray's style and makes it easy to see why so many find Murray a tough opponent.

So where next for Murray?

Well, let's be clear, Andy Murray is a long way off the peak of his abilities but it's hard to imagine that this peak will take him anywhere but to the number one spot. Maybe I'm as guilty as anyone of getting over excited and having too many expectations... but surely it's just a matter of time.

Andy Murray Shows Fighting Spirit - Reaches Qtr-Finals in San Jose

Andy Murray lost the first three of his games to Yeu-Tzuoo Wang, but showed the fighting spirit, that has become so familiar to his fans, to win six of the next seven games.

6-4 was the final score of the first set, descibed by Murray as "the toughest I've played on the tour".

The second set seemed more straightforward and the final match score was 6-4 6-2.

Andy Murray will face Robin Soderling (97) in the Qtr-Final. Soderling overcame Philippoussis in the previous round, but has had a difficult twelve months, dropping nearly 70 places in the world rankings.

Andy Murray was victorious in their previous encounter in Thailand last year, when he won 7-6 7-6. A tournament in which Murray finished runner-up to Federer.

If Murray can defeat Soderling in the Qtr-Final, a meeting with Roddick in the semi-final could well be the result.

Andy Murray Beats Mardy Fish and Starts Pun Landslide

Andy Murray may have found the media attention a little tough lately, but he might spare a thought for the unfortunately named, Mardy Fish.

Murray won his match against Fish comfortably 6-2 6-2 which gave rise to headlines such as:

- Murray guts Fish
- Rampant Murray Batters Fish
- Murray fries Fish in San Jose
- Murray thrashes Fish in San Jose

Actually the last headline is from the BBC and, as you might expect, they went for a nice sensible headline.

What shocks me most is that none of these incredibly witty journalists picked up on the obvious connection between fish and murray eel :-P

Anyway, more importantly...

This looks like the best performance by Murray this year, only losing on his serve once and taking six of his eleven break points.

I couldn't find any service stats for this match, but Murray said:

"I've been struggling with my serve but I've practised a lot in the last couple of weeks and I was happy with my serve tonight."

Murray's first serve was dipping well below 50% in recent tournaments and it would be great if this aspect of his game seems to be improving.

Murray will face either James Blake (20) or Yeu-Tzuoo Wang (88) in the 2nd round.

Andy Murray Vs Mardy Fish

Andy Murray will face Mardy Fish (288) tomorrow in San Jose.

Andy is the youngest player at this tournament but, based on the current rankings, you'd expect this match to be a cinch. Still, their previous account went Fish's way as he won in 3 sets in Indianapolis last year so nothing can be taken foregranted.

In other news, Andy Murray has a new picture on the ATP website :-)

Spirited Defeat for Andy Murray vs top seed Ivan Ljubicic

Losing to the top seed in Zagreb may have been predictable, but Andy Murray fans will take delight in Murray pushing the home favourite to three sets.

4-6 6-2 6-3 was the final score. Murray may wonder what could have been after breaking Ljubicic's opening service game of the second set, but will hopefully focus on the postitives.

Surely it's just a matter of time before Murray has another good tournament run.
